We absolutely love these ideas from the RSPCA!

Empty toilet roll tubes – we all have them, but did you know they can become hours of fun for your pets?

With a little creativity, you can turn these cardboard tubes into stimulating toys that cost next to nothing. Whether you’ve got a dog, cat, rabbit, bird, or small rodent, there’s something here for everyone!

Here are 8 easy ideas you can try at home:

Rabbit Treat Tube

You need: A tube, hay, and rabbit treats.

Pop a small piece of carrot or your rabbit’s favourite treat inside the tube. Stuff hay into both ends so your bunny has to nibble through to get the prize. Want to make it fancy? Wrap it in brown paper and twist the ends – instant rabbit cracker!

Doggy treat Cracker

You need: A tube and dog treats.

Place treats inside and fold in each end to seal. Let your pooch figure out how to break it open – tasty puzzle complete!

Hanging Bird Feeder Tube

You need: 3–4 tubes, string, and bird treats.

Poke holes in the centre of each tube, thread them onto string horizontally with small gaps between, and hang it in your bird’s cage. Pop some treats inside and watch them peck, climb, and explore.

Cat Treat Hunt

You need: 15 tubes, non-toxic glue, and cat treats or a small toy.

Glue the tubes together into a honeycomb shape (5-4-3-2-1). Hide treats or slide a toy through the tunnels to keep your cat entertained.

Mouse or Hamster House

You need: 6 tubes, non-toxic glue, and bedding.

Glue six tubes into a pyramid and stuff each with soft bedding. Place it in their cage or hang it low for a cosy hideout.

Tunnel or maze for Rodents

You need: Tubes and scissors.

Single tubes make perfect tunnels, or you can link several together to create a maze. Cut holes in the sides and slot tubes together to make it as tricky as you like.

Dog Scent Box

You need: A cardboard box, tubes, scissors, and treats.

Stand tubes upright in a box to form a honeycomb. Remove a few so the tubes can slide around, then hide a treat in one. Your dog will love sniffing out the reward.

Treat Ball for All Pets

You need: A tube, scissors, and treats.

Cut the tube into five rings. Slot them together to make a little ball, pop a treat inside, and seal with the last ring. It rolls across the floor like a toy, but your pet will smell the snack hidden inside!

Why these games are great:

  • They’re inexpensive and eco-friendly.

  • They keep pets mentally stimulated.

  • They’re fun for the whole family to make together.
